2012 Olympic Spot

People are already planning for the 2012 Summer Olympics that are over ten years away! Many cities in the United States are fighting for the right to host those Olympic games. These cities are: Cincinnati, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Tampa, and Washington D.C.-Baltimore. The United States Olympic Committee will narrow down these cities by March of 2002. The city chosen as America's choice for the 2012 Olympics will be picked by the fall of 2002. The city chosen to represent America will then have to compete against cities from around the world to be chosen as the overall winner. Then the International Olympic Committee selects the final city!

About the Red Cross

We talked about the Red Cross in our Around the World section this week. This wonderful organization helps people in need throughout the world. We thought we would expand on exactly what the Red Cross does in our Fun Facts section.

The Red Cross has several areas where it provides assistance to people around the world.

*Military Communication: The Red Cross helps people who work in the military stay in touch with their families when they are away.

*Biomedical Services: This area of the Red Cross helps to meet the country's health care needs. For example, the Red Cross collects blood from people around the United States to help those people who need it.

*Disaster Services: The American Red Cross helps people who have lived through disasters such as hurricanes, earthquakes, or fires. They help to prepare communities in case a disaster ever strikes. All of this type of Red Cross Assistance is given free of charge. This is made possible by generous gifts of time and money from many, many people.

*Health and Safety Services: For the past 85 years, the Red Cross has trained millions of people in first aid and CPR in a practical and easy-to-understand format. Classes are for adults and children as young as five years old!
