WORLD
CHAMPION YANKEES
This year
the World Series was played between the New York Yankees and the Atlanta
Braves. The World Series champion is the first team to win four games
in the seven game series.
The New
York Yankees needed only four games to become the world champions for
the second year in a row!
Game No.
1 was in Atlanta. The Atlanta pitcher was Greg Maddux and the New York
pitcher was Orlando Hernandez who is known as "El Duque." There was
no score in the game until the eighth inning when the Yankees broke
the game open and scored four runs off starting pitcher Maddux and relief
pitcher Rocker. The final score of Game No. 1 was Yankees 4 and Atlanta
1. The Yankees were now up one game over the Braves.
Game No.
2 was also played in Atlanta. The Yankees pitcher was David Cone and
Kevin Millwood started for the Braves. The Yankees scored early with
three runs in the first inning and never looked back. The final score
was Yankees 7 and Braves 2. The series score was now 2 - 0 in favor
of the Yankees.
Game No.
3 was held in New York. The pitchers were Andy Petit for the Yankees
and Tom Glavine for the Braves. This was an exciting game as it went
into extra innings! Chad Curtis was the hero for the Yankees when he
hit a homerun in the tenth inning to win the game. The final score was
Yankees 6 and Atlanta 5. The Yankees had now won 3 games in the series
and the Braves had won none. No team has ever come back from a 3 - 0
series start to win the World Series.
Game No.
4 was also in New York. The final score of this game was Yankees 4 and
Braves 1. This win ended the World Series and earned the Yankees the
title of World Series Champion for the second year in a row.
People
are calling the New York Yankees the Team of the Century because they
have won 25 World Series titles in the past 100 years! They are also
being called the "Team of the Decade" because this was their third World
Series title this decade. They won the World Series in 1996, 1998 and
now 1999!
