MARTIN
EARNS PGA CARD
Last
week we wrote about Casey Martin. He is the disabled golfer who was
trying to earn a spot on the PGA Tour for the upcoming season. He would
be the first golfer to ride in a golf cart on the PGA Tour. Well, he
did it!
Martin
was playing in the final tournament on the Nike Tour. Remember that
a golfer has to finish in the top 15 on the money list on the Nike Tour
in order to earn a spot on the PGA Tour. Martin was 12th on the list
going into the final tournament.
The tournament
was at Highland Oaks Country Club in Dothan, Alabama. Martin finished
37th at this tournament which dropped him to 14th on the money list.
This was still good enough for him to earn his PGA Tour card.
Martin
was given his PGA Tour card from the PGA commissioner (the man in charge
of the PGA), Tim Finchem. Mr. Finchem stated, "Right now, we're just
pleased and excited for Casey. We have a great deal of admiration for
what he's done, first with his physical disability and then with all
the distractions."
The PGA
did appeal the decision that allows Martin to use a cart on the PGA
Tour. The court could rule any day on this appeal.
