SKATING
GRAND PRIX
The
Lalique trophy was earned by Russian skating star Maria Butyrskaya this
past weekend. This Grand Prix skating event was held in Paris, France.
Michelle
Kwan, who won the 1998 World Skating Championships, is an American skater
who is a big rival of Maria Butyrskaya. Kwan did not participate in
this recent Grand Prix event, but will go up against Butyrskaya in the
Grand Prix Finals in January.
Butyrskaya
also won the 1999 World Skating Championships earlier in the year. She
is anxious to meet Kwan in the finals in January. She states, "I would
like to see Michelle Kwan come to the Russian championships. It would
be interesting to see how she does."
Victoria
Volchkova came in second place in this Grand Prix and American Sarah
Hughes placed third. Hughes completed five triple jumps during her performance.
She is excited to meet Michelle Kwan at the U.S. Championships this
February. Hughes states, "Michelle is a very good skater, but going
into nationals it is not a sure thing that she will win. Everybody has
to compete and hopefully they will judge it fairly."
