Tennis
is in the sports news this week. Here is a tennis trivia question.
Question:
Why does the word "Love" mean zero points in tennis?
Answer: Tennis players do not like to have "Love" when they are playing!
The answer to the question comes from two different languages. Tennis
began in France around the 1100's or 1200's. It is possible that "Love"
may have come from the French word l'ĉuf , which was slang for zero.
The English invented the modern version of tennis in the late 1800's.
They pronounced l'ĉuf as "luff". Over time "luff" became "love".
