DAVENPORT
WINS CHASE TITLE
Lindsay
Davenport earned her seventh tennis title of the year by winning the
Chase Championships in New York this past weekend. This win earned her
$500,000 in prize money.
Davenport
struggled in the first round of this tournament because of a sore leg
muscle. She beat France's Amelie Mauresmo 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. Davenport went
on to beat Martina Hingus in the finals 6-4, 6-2.
Hingus
had an intense semifinal match against the No. 3 player Venus Williams
6-4, 7-6. She had a difficult time playing intense matches back to back.
Hingus stated, "Once you have to play either (of) the Williams sisters
or Lindsay, you are going to have two tough matches. You have to go
through them if you want to win. It's kind of tough to come back consecutive
days and play your best."
Davenport,
who is 6 foot 2 inches tall, will end this season ranked No. 2 in the
world and Hingus is ranked No. 1. Davenport states, "I firmly believe
Martina is No. 1, but now I have a couple of months to catch her."
