The
winner of the coveted Heisman Trophy was announced on Saturday, December
11, 1999 at the Downtown Athletic Club in New York City. The winner
was a college football player named Ron Dayne.
Ron
Dayne is a running back for the University of Wisconsin. He helped them
achieve a 9-win and 2-loss record and earn a spot in the Rose Bowl,
which is to be played on New Year's Day. In addition, he broke the all-time
rushing record, which was set by last year's Heisman winner, Ricky Williams.
Dayne
is from Berlin, New Jersey. He is a 5-foot-10 inch, 254-pound senior
who has a unique combination of speed and power as a running back. He
was the runaway winner in the voting as he earned 586 first-place votes
and totaled 2,042 points. Georgia Tech's quarterback Joe Hamilton finished
second with 994 points and third place went to Virginia Tech's Michael
Vick with 319 points.
Dayne
credits his coach, Barry Alvarez, for much of his success. The two shared
a long and joyful hug upon the win.
