PINCAY'S JOCKEY TITLE

Jockey Laffit Pincay entered the record books on Friday, December 10, 1999. He broke the record for most wins by a jockey in history with 8,834! The jockey currently closest to this number is Pat Day with 7,614 wins.

The old record had been 8,833 wins and was held by Bill Shoemaker ever since 1970.

Laffit Pincay was born on December 29, 1946 in Panama City, Panama. He is 52 years old, 5 feet 1 inch tall and weighs 117 pounds. His career earnings total $206 million!

Pincay has had a Hall of Fame career. His victories include the Kentucky Derby in 1984 while riding a horse named Swale. Pincay talks about that win. "I wanted to win that race so bad for all those years. It seemed like no matter what I did, I couldn't win the race. When I won, the feeling was so unbelievable."

Pincay was riding a horse named Irish Nip when he won his 8,834th race. After the record setting win he stated, "I felt like I won the Kentucky Derby all over again."

Pincay has been riding horses for 35 years. That is a long time in the saddle!
