About the Writer:
LIA LUZ

My name is Lia, I'm 23 years old and I'm a foreign intern at Scripps Howard Foundation. I came from Brazil, where I work at the fifth biggest newspaper in the country and where I attend university (I'm graduating next summer). I'm not a reporter yet because in Brazil you can only work as a reporter after you graduate. Even though I was able to write several stories on the paper. One of them, the one I like the most, is about children that live with their mothers in jail. It was very touching to face that reality. Some of the kids had never been outside. That story really made a change, because after it was published the kids were invited by the first-lady to go to a Christmas party, where they got presents and ate things they had never eaten before. That's what I like the most in journalism: you can make a difference just by telling other people's story.

I like mostly every area in journalism, but I have this special passion for telling interesting stories of different people and realities. I think there is so much to see and learn from other people. I think it is so amazing how people can be different and similar at the same time. I guess I just love hearing people's stories because I'm a very curious person.
